Patricia Rea

High School Student Innovator, Biotechnology Researcher

Patricia Rea is an independent synthetic microbiologist and student researcher working on a strain of yeast capable of surviving the conditions of Mars.


She is one of the junior editors of the book Zero to Genetic Engineering Hero by Dr. Justin Pahara and Julie Legault. Patricia has had the honor of being selected to Team Canada twice in 2019 for international science fairs: MILSET Expo Sciences International in Abu Dhabi, and MAGMA Exporecerca Jove in Barcelona, where she was also presented with the IARC Young Scientist Award. Patricia also received a Silver Medal at Canada’s 2019 national science fair, as well as the Discovery Award for the country’s top junior research project and the Excellence in Astronomy Award.


In 2020, Patricia was awarded with the WISEST Internship award at the continental INSPO Research and Innovation Fair. Patricia volunteers with CAGIS (the Canadian Association for Girls In Science) where she is a Teen Ambassador. Her paper BioGrade Yeast: Biomanufacturing with Antifreeze Yeast on Mars will be published in the Canadian Science Fair Journal in Fall 2020.  She also placed 1st at the 2019 Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute Science Fair.

Patricia was a featured panelist at Metamorphosis 2019, one of Ontario’s largest STEM conferences. At Metamorphosis Patricia also led a hands-on protein folding workshop. Patricia also volunteers with Ontario's youth-led outreach group STEM Kids Rock.
